Meet the brains behind our projects.

Head

Prof. Dr. Rolf Becker


Rolf has been a professor for environmental physics at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences (HSRW) since 2010.


He received his diploma in physics from the University of Bonn and his PhD in hydrology from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.


At HSRW, he leads the IoT Lab, the Drone Lab, and the Earth Observation Lab (EOLab). In addition to his research and teaching in environmental monitoring in bachelor's and master's programs, he is heavily involved in STEM education. He regularly conducts workshops with schools.



Staff

Jan Sonntag


Jan is a graduate of Media Communication and Computer Science. 


He works on Frontend, Backend and Embedded Programming. He is involved in multiple projects at the EOLab including Internet of Agriculture. He is also responsible for supervising the students at the lab in different projects.

Harley Nelson Lara Alonso


Harley is a Mechatronics and Control Systems Engineer from Nicaragua. Currently part of an exchange program with his university in Nicaragua, he is working on different projects at HSRW. 


Recently, he has been working with NVIDIA Jetsons on Tello Drones for Object Detection and Image Classification.

Moritz Prüm


Moritz is a graduate of Environment and Energy from HSRW. 


At EOLab he works on embedded systems and LoRaWAN, remote sensing  and custom payloads. He is currently working at the ZDI center at the university, conducting workshops for school students in STEM.

Kathrin Smolarczyk


Kathrin is a PhD candidate at Friedrich Alexander University of Erlanger-Núrnberg. She is an empirical educational researcher.


She leads the project EnvironMINT at EOLab. She is passionate about educational innovation in the field of STEM.

Clein Alexander Sarmiento Castrillon


Clein is a Mechatronics Engineer from Colombia. 


He is reponsible for supervising various educational courses and supporting multiple projects at the lab.

Students

Shreya Gupta


Shreya holds a Bachelor in Communcation (Digital Media) from The University of Queensland, Australia. She is a student of Environment and Energy at HSRW. 


Currently, she manages the media, communication and marketing for the EOLab. She has a knack for Science Communication and a keen interest in Environmental Science.

Henrik Schoofs


Henrik is pursuing a Bachelor in Infotronic System Engineering. He started at the lab as an apprentice working on electronic devices and systems, in 2019. 


He is currently working on several projects at the lab, including LINEG groundwater level measurement and the Weather station.

Azam Zubairi


Azam is a student of Masters in Information Engineering at HSRW. 


His work is focused on cloud services with Kubernetes and software development.

Seifeldin Abouelella


Seif is a Computer Science graduate from Egypt. He is a student of Environment and Energy at HSRW. 


He works on projects involving APIs, User Interfaces and Data Engineering at EOLab.

Mohamed Sherif


Sherif is a student of Bachelor in Mechatronics Systems Engineering at HSRW. He also has a background in Mechanical Engineering.


His work includes supporting the lab projects involving microcontrollers, designing electrical circuits for IoT projects. He is interested in Matlab, C, Kicad, Simulink, EVs, and Robotics. 

Alumni

Sina Navid


Sina is from Iran and holds a Bachelor in Communication Engineering. He is a graduate of Masters in Information Engineering from HSRW. 


In collaboration with our partner company LINEG, he worked towards the development of OpenHyPE, a dashboard system tailored for Data Analytics. The primary focus of this project was to analyze nitrate concentrations in groundwater.

Farooq Abbas


Farooq is a student of Masters in Information Engineering at HSRW. He has a Bachelor in Computer Science from Pakistan and is experienced in teaching computer science to high school students. 


His interests include Geo Informatics and Web Development. During his time at the lab, he worked on Tree Mapping and visualising data on a web portal. 

Ali Farzizada


Ali studied the Bachelor in Information Communication Engineering at HSRW. He is from Azerbaijan. 


He worked on the project "Let's PlAIy", connecting the programming language SNAP with Jetsons for Object Detection.

Ilgar Rasulov


Ilgar pursued a Masters at HSRW. He is from Azerbaijan.  He has worked for several years as an ERP Programmer.


His research tasks included Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. At EOLab he worked with mini drones and Jetson computers.
