Our team member Jan Sonntag was on a mission at the Tambopata tower located in Peru. A new prototype of LoRa node for dendrometer reading was installed to test whether sending and reading the measurement data is possible. As part of the endeavour, LoRaWAN gateway and router with 4G connection were also installed at the tower in order to allow an infrastructure of multiple eddy covariance towers in the Amazon basin with connection to one network. This network will maintain a data feed from areas with the towers to be collected online via a VPN service remotely. This comes as part of steps to support our project partner at the Institute of Nature, Earth and Energy at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú to set up this infrastructure that takes the communication with the towers to the next level of remote connection, as well as create a central hub of data exchange in the Andesflux tower network. A series of successful tests of measurement and data reading will establish the long-term usability of the network. In the meantime, the beautiful views of the Amazon forests are to be enjoyed.
